Born in Sheppard AFB., TX. September 19th 1981, Robert L. Rooks was born to two
proud Air Force vet's from Mississippi and Oklahoma. With 2 older brothers and 5 older sisters, Robert was the youngest.
Coming up Robert has a storybook tale of being a military brat. Being honored
with what a lot would call a hardship of relocating every so often stateside and overseas. From Greece, to Germany Robert
and his family moved around on the U.S. Governments dime experiencing new things, witnessing events some only see on T.V.
From the beautiful side of the Mediterranean to the terrorism witnessed first hand by the U.S. citizens at Hellinikon AFB.
in 1990-1991.
Robert's brother and sister from his parents (excluding his siblings from his
father's previous relationships) steeped Robert in music theory and expression by having and exhibiting musical talents of
their own. His brother played the alto, tenor and barry saxophone and his sister the flute. They all vocalized
at times, and danced. They'd perform at school talent shows, church plays, and sometimes even exclusive shows for an
amused set of parents that just loved to see them working together.
Roberts first love was auto racing. Whether it was NASCAR or Formula 1.
So of course his first dream was to become a race car driver. Not far from one of his fathers professions, who raced
semi-professionally in a Ford Torino. Then after moving to Greece, Robert fell in love with aerospace. Living
right behind the local airstrip in Athens, he got to learn the different kinds of aircraft in his leasure; instead of being
outside playing, he'd rather be on the balcony tallying up the repititions of different types and carriers flying by.
Going from installation to installation, Ramstein, GE. being the next, he found
his third love: Germany. This would be the 1st of three tours in Germany to date for Robert 2 of which he had a choice
to stay at home in Austin. He usually chose Germany.
His second trip to Germany, to stay with his father in Kaiserslautern is where
he started his own musical history. He'd always played his grandmother's piano his father kept around, but he started
learning music theory, music reading and actual band activity with the trombone at Vogelweh middle school.
After getting home-sick and spending some time in middle school at home in Austin,
further developing his skill with the trombone and piano; playing in the symphony band and jazz ensemble at Bailey middle
school, he'd decided in his eigth grade year he wanted to go to high school in Germany.
His father had moved to Wiesbaden and that's where Robert had spent the most
time in one place his whole childhood.
Here, Robert gained a few more loves. Drill, Drums, Writing, and women.
Robert performed on the Wiesbaden Drill Team every year, and every year becoming
more involved respectively in every field of the sport. By the time he'd gotten to his 11th grade year, he and his best
friend Nick, had taken over the drill team, and made it into something more than just something coveted by a small few. Rather
something sought after and respected by many.
Robert always wrote, whether it was a diary, poetry, or short novels. "Uncovered
Thoughts" a short novel written by a 10th grade Robert Rooks sits collecting dust at the library of Congress, along with "19
times my pen hit paper" a book of poetry. Robert said being your worse critic is an understatement when it comes to
his literature, and thinks where it stopped is where it'll stay.
Robert made a switch from Trombone to drums in the tenth grade. Something
about the showmanship of the rythm section really appealed to him, and put up his F-trigger trombone which he felt he'd mastered
away and picked up a couple of mallets to play the Timpani (kettle drum) because none of the other percussionist really wanted
to play them anyway. Throughout the year, Robert had slowly moved his way through the percussion section exhibiting
his skill that'd seemed to come from no where because he didnt have a set of his own, just played at school, and church as
much as he could. One crucial moment in his musical career, the "wipe-out" solo which was always held for the first chair
percussionist was left open because the tom-tom player broke his leg in the second quarter of the homecoming game. Robert
stepped up to the plate, and made all doubts of his ability obsolete.
Women. A chapter in Roberts life that is unfortunately still being written.
"Being with a lot of them doesn't make one an expert in the ways of the woman... but dammit it worked for me."
Robert graduated from Wiesbaden H.S. with some ups and downs, and was promtply
kicked out of the country by his dad, and went home to continue writing his "woman chapter" in Austin. Soon after realizing
working in childcare wouldnt be right for him at the moment, he enlisted in the US Air Force. One of the things Robert
always knew he'd do, just didn't know when. After falling in love with Drill, he always knew that Precision Rifle Drill
was going to be in his path. Yet, a power hungry, overly-authorative, unfair, and quite ugly light Colonel took that
chance from him, and had him and 4 other airmen ousted from the military for not performing too well on their CDC's, a test
to show proven knowledge and proficiency in ones AFSC (air force specialty code). After damn-near having a nervous-breakdown
near-miss, Robert bottled up his anger for how everything went down, and went back to childcare. But soon-after learning
that the AFSC he was trained for was a very lucritive one, it was good-bye Ingram, TX, and hello... WORLD!
Robert has been traveling ever since as an Aircraft Structural Technician.
Chasing bigger and better contracts, learning more and more about different aircraft, and while in the short-term, making
himself look extremely unstable, in the long-run making himself a well-rounded individual in the aviation field by inspecting
and modifying over 18 different aircraft ranging from civilian cargo and passenger, military rotary wing and fixed wing, and
corporate. Also, re-enlisting in the Army National Guard, Robert's been able to keep in touch with one of his loves: the military,
and currently is serving in the US Air Force Reserve, under yet again that same AFSC he was so unfairly discharged for lack
of proficiency in.
During his travels Robert aquired lots of aquaintances and rekindled a lot of
old friendships, and alot of old loves. Such as music, and racing... and women.
Through that third love Robert's aquired 3 beautiful children that started out
being his first fans. "If they end up being the only ones that appreciate anything I've done, that'll be fine with me.
Just as long as it get's done." These children were from Robert, and Ansley. A rollercoaster of a relationship
that has seemed to be doomed for peril ever since conception. But they manage to not kill each other, and raise their
children to the best of their ability, and learn from their mistakes.
Robert lives in central Texas now, where he runs Do It Big MotorSports, records
ROOKS/TEXIZ music, continues to write his short novels, and models contractually.
